Resonant electron scattering by defects in single-walled carbon nanotubes.

We report the characterization of defects in individual metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes by transport measurements and scanned gate microscopy. A sizable fraction of metallic nanotubes grown by chemical vapor deposition exhibits strongly gate voltage-dependent resistance at room temperature. Scanned gate measurements reveal that this behavior originates from resonant electron scattering ...

Preferential growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes with metallic conductivity.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes can be classified as either metallic or semiconducting, depending on their conductivity, which is determined by their chirality. Existing synthesis methods cannot controllably grow nanotubes with a specific type of conductivity. By varying the noble gas ambient during thermal annealing of the catalyst, and in combination with oxidative and reductive species, we al...

Metallic single-walled silicon nanotubes.

Atomistic computer-simulation evidences are presented for the possible existence of one-dimensional silicon nanostructures: the square, pentagonal, and hexagonal single-walled silicon nanotubes (SWSNTs). The local geometric structure of the SWSNTs differs from the local tetrahedral structure of cubic diamond silicon, although the coordination number of atoms of the SWSNTs is still fourfold. Ab ...

Dispersions of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes of high length.

In summary, we have presented a suitable approach to obtain surfactant-stabilized suspensions of long, individually dispersed SWCNTs essentially free of bundles. The combination of mild tip and bath ultrasonication has proven effective in unbundling the SWCNT ropes and, at the same time, in minimizing tube shortening. This method is expected to be useful for applications that critically depend ...

Antenna chemistry with metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes.

We show that, when subjected to microwave fields, surfactant-stabilized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) develop polarization potentials at their extremities that readily drive electrochemical reactions. In the presence of transition metal salts with high oxidation potential (e.g., FeCl3), SWNTs drive reductive condensation to metallic nanoparticles with essentially diffusion-limited kine...
